Funerals Set for Chicago Police Officers Hit by Train - NBC Chicago

The wake for Officer Conrad Gary will take place from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Blake-Lamb Funeral Home, 4727 W. 103rd St. in Oak Lawn. Officer Gary's funeral will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday at St. Rita of Cascia Shrine Chapel, located at 7740 S. Western Ave. in Chicago.The wake for Officer Eduardo Marmolejo will take place from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Blake-Lamb Funeral Home in Oak Lawn. Officer Marmolejo's funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Rita of Cascia Shrine Chapel in Chicago. Internment for both officers will be private.Police previously released funeral information that was not yet finalized.Marmolejo, 36, and Gary, 31, were working as partners on Monday night and had a combined four years on the force, authorities said. Gary had been with the department for 18 months, while Marmolejo had been with CPD for two-and-a-half years.They were responding to a report of shots fired around 7 p.m. near East 103rd Street and South Cottage Grove Avenue in the city's Rosemoor neighborhood, officials said.Footage from a body camera found 100 feet from the tracks showed a northbound train heading toward the officers, who were standing on southbound tracks when they were suddenly hit, Chicago Police Department spokesman Tom Ahern said.Authorities believe the northbound train drowned out the sounds of a southbound train approaching the officers from behind.According to Ahern, the officers were heard on camera "talking to each other" up until the moment they were struck.Less than 24 hours after the officers' deaths, thousands of dollars has been raised to help their families. The GoFundMe campaigns for Gary and Marmolejo collectively have more than $20,000 as of 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. The young officers each leave behind wives and children. The fundraiser for the Marmolejo family, which includes the officer's wife and three young girls, raised a little more than half its $10,000 goal in two hours Tuesday. RELATED LIVE UPDATES: Funeral For Officer Conrad GaryOfficer Conrad Gary died Monday alongside his partner Eduardo Marmolejo after the two responded to a call of shots fired and were struck by a South Shore Line train.This morning, countless numbers of his brothers and sisters in blue honored their fallen colleague with a blue light procession from the funeral home to the chapel at 76th and Western.Upon arrival, family members were greeted by scores of officers in their dress uniforms who saluted the hearse as it was driven to the doors of the church.The 31-year-old officer’s wife emerged carrying their baby wrapped in blankets.The governor, mayor and city’s top cop were all on hand to pay their respects and deliver prepared remarks.Cardinal Blase Cupich presided over the ceremony and will also say the funeral mass Saturday morning for Marmolejo.The head of the 100 Club, Joe Ahern, has been with the officers families since shortly after their loved ones died.“Being here with literally thousands of police officers from all over the city and actually around the country that have come in to show their respects to this family, I hope it gives them strength,” Ahern said. “We’ll be there forever with them, and I hope that the entire city continues to show their love and respect to this family but also to all of our Chicago police officers.”There will be a procession after the mass down Western to 111th Street.
